What is Innovation Icon?

Innovation Icon is a nationwide contest that provides management and engineering students across the country an opportunity to build exciting innovative solutions using diverse technologies under the guidance of their faculty and CSC mentors.

What kind of projects are eligible?

Projects for building software applications that address real-life business/non-business problems built using open source platform and frameworks are eligible for the contest. Please refer to the project guidelines section for details.

What is the criteria used for evaluation of projects entries?

Project entries would be selected based on their uniqueness, innovation quotient, relevance to a specific real-life problem and potential for use of open-source frameworks and components.

How would I know if my project application has been selected?

Communication would be sent to the selected teams along with a project start-up kit by third week of September 2007.

I built an exciting software application last semester. Can I submit that as my project entry?

You need to apply for the contest by documenting your project application in standard format. If selected, you may re-use your existing software code/components for building your project deliverables.

What should be the size of a team?


In order to participate in this contest, a team must have minimum of two members and maximum of four members with a faculty guide (mandatory) from the same institution.

Why is the faculty guide mandatory on each team?

The faculty guide would not only guide the participating teams on technology, design and quality aspects, but also act as a single point of contact (SPOC) for communication between CSC and the teams. Faculty guide would also coordinate distribution of project start-up kits and other resources/communication from CSC.

Can I be part of more than one team?

A student should not be a part of more than one team. Faculty guides can guide any number of teams from their institution.

Can I apply for more than one projects?

One team can submit more than one project entries at the application stage, which might increase the chances of one of the projects being selected; however, a student would be able to work only on one project for the contest.

Will I get any development software from CSC for my project work?

CSC would not provide any software license or hardware/computing resources for development. Participating teams would need to use their own resources or from their institute (after taking appropriate permission from concerned authorities) for the project.

What kind of infrastructure support/ resources I would get from CSC for build my application?

CSC would provide collaborative version control and project development management system (sourceforge), which is part of the CSC COIN network to the teams that have been selected for project development phase.

What are mentors for? What kind of support can I expect from mentors?

Mentors are selected software professionals from CSC who would provide guidance and design/technical support to the participating teams. Each selected project team would be assigned a CSC mentor who can be reached for any queries, issues or guidance. Teams are encouraged to leverage the knowledge and experience of CSC mentors to build competitive application entries.

I am a management student. Can I apply in Innovation Icon? What kind of projects can I submit?

Yes, students of management courses can participate in the contest. Projects selected should adhere to the project guidelines outlined in the contest rules.
